The book, in its way, setth like a gritty Kris Kristoferson song. Not since ‘The Ice at the Bottom of the World’ has the use of language so enthralled me.

The entire thing shows what a talent I was introduced to this novel, oddly enough, by Seth Morgan’s obituary. In the spring ofthe publication of Homeboy led to positive reviews and book-signing engagements for Morgan in several cities, including San Francisco, where 17 years earlier he had impaled a bystander’s hand with a knife during an armed robbery.

At the time of his own death in a motorcycle accident, Morgan was under contract for a second novel, set in New Orleans and titled Mambo Mephiste. I recommend it for those wishing a challenge, with an open mind to human behavior in all its cravings and perversions, but who also like an interesting tale, well told.

Panoramic in its view of sleaze, Morgan’s gritty novel depends on numerous secondary characters–each perfectly etched in grime–and a himeboy that pulls together like a 19th-century novel, or a well-made movie, which this could easily become. Probably one of morgsn top 5 favorite reads due mostly to the correlation between the subject matter and the secret side of my own life. Now this was a great, if utterly disgusting, first novel.
