For the first in the final three books, I thought it was a great set-up book. However, there is an even larger threat to the people coming from the Old World. Now Goodkind returns with a new novel of Richard and Kahlan, the beginning of a sequence of three novels that will bring their epic story to its culmination.
Moreover, writing isn’t all about getting published, and I disagree with your statement of born writers. While the prophecy of Richard lives on, those around him are insistent he stay and lead the D’Hara’s into battle.
I was also mildly irritated that he took so long to give us even a hint as to what may have happened BUT all in all I loved the reveals at the end of the book and I already downloaded the next. Chainfire continues the story of Richard in his attempt to teach the people that their lives are theirs alone, that they can be free of the Imperial Order.
Richard learns that the Sliph knows of a place called the Deep Nothing.

Until the book before this one, it was almost as if Chase had just ceased to exist.

BUT that is just me and I do understand for some people they can not compartmentalize their love for the story and their hate for Goodkind’s personal interjection and repetition.
The initial fr While I admit that, in the beginning of this one, I was frustrated and slightly annoyed, the book definitely picked up and moved at a fast pace, which I appreciated. She joins Jagang and his army as they launch an attack on the Confessor’s Palace in Aydindril.
No one is going to pick up book 9 of a series without reading at least a few of the eight that came before it. After being gravely injured in battle, Richard awakes to discover Kahlan missing.

Here starts an adventure that will span lifetimes and worlds. He fumbles around, not really sure what he’s doing, strains, trying to force it, and then gives up.
Coming to the final 2 books of my re-read. There is so much unnecessary dialog in this book that basically just repeats the exact same things over, and over, goodoind over again. Fearing for Kahlan’s life, Richard desperately tries to find some trace of her and at the same time convince the others that she exists.
First of all, What does Goodkind have against just telling us what the cause of the drama is outright? I have read the eight books that came before this one. Chainfire cgainfire, sparks, and eventually chanfire There is a lot of exposition in this story and quite a bit of redundancy. Finally, and most annoying, the story now becomes almost identical to the first book. Surprisingly, this was an okay book, after several really bad volumes.
So that all the change she had affected on a personal level was undone. Most notably I’d bring up the bubbles of evil from Wheel of Time. It goes far beyond tense into boring, and then far beyond boring to the point that gooodkind actually funny how long Goodkind draws it out.

Kahlan assumes control of the army and stalls Jagang’s army from capturing Aydindril, the seat of power in the Midlands. This was like a breath of fresh air after reading the previous eight books.
You won’t miss anything major. When you give an explanation of Cicadas in one chapter, for instance, you do not need to have another character in another location give the exact same explanation about Cicadas in the very next chapter. While Nicci eliminates the rest of the Imperial Troops scouts, Richard and Jillian look for answers in the catacombs.
