It also explores in detail the advantages and limitations of asynchronous messaging architectures. I’ll pattdrns this book with a different mindset about integration: Thanks for telling us about the problem. Jul 08, Ronald rated it it was amazing Shelves: The best and only?

Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions

Integratiom is a frequent speaker at technical conferences around the world. I enjoyed learning about the patterns which are applicable to business processes such as the ‘process manager’, the ‘aggregator’, the ‘routing slip’ and ‘scatter-gather’.

May 03, Franck Chauvel rated it liked it Shelves: We need techniques that allow us to take applications that were never designed to interoperate and break down the stovepipes so we can gain a greater benefit than the individual applications can iintegration us. I’ve worked on a few systems that used enterprise-level messaging and I thought I had a good handle on the space but I picked up the book anyway just to deepen my knowledge.

Very good reading even if you plan to work with such messaging solutions like Actors. And like most patterns books, the information was delivered in an organized, systematic way that gives me common terminology to use with other engineers.

From the technology perspective, there are few providers that implement EIP – one of which Apache Camel. Messaging systems aren’t going anywhere, and they have a lot of advantages.

Open Preview See a Problem? Why was it the only one in the series I hadn’t read? I now have a much clearer understanding of messaging patterns, which when I read documentation for modern messaging systems eg RabbitMQI intebration immediately see the design decisions that were made and the alternatives that exist. The book is very dry and – as I’ve pointed out – almost hilariously long, but it’s worth reading for sure. The authors present practical advice on designing code that connects an application enterprjse a messaging system, and provide extensive information to help you determine when to send a message, how to route it to the proper destination, and how to monitor the health of a messaging system. Enterprise Integration Patterns

A book that enterpprise messaging for enterprises. Gave it five stars because of the breadth and depth of content. Patterns tended to be repetitive and the same concepts bregor coming up over and over again. This book provides a consistent vocabulary and visual notation framework to describe large-scale integration solutions across many technologies.

I learned an absolute ton about messaging systems, channels, routing, filtering, transforming, design, and much more. Each pattern description is followed by a use-case study of the problem it solves and pattdrns or more following examples.

While many of these techniques are billed as being for gluing together heterogeneous “enterprise” systems, I actually find the patterns described as being essential to building any large distributed system. Most of the patterns are related to messaging, but it’s clear that they could be applied in other contexts as well.

I wouldn’t recommend reading this book cover-to-cover, but it could serve as a great reference if you need to tackle some complex integration scenario or have some other enterprise messaging needs. I’m delighted with the job that they have done. Do you want to know which style of application integration is best for your purposes? The same patterns can be applied in this context so it was definitely hohpr worth the read for me to think on higher levels when developing functional programs.
