I read this as part of my “read everything ever written about the Bronx” kick, but found that it also fit into another one of my favorite subgenres: I’ve read several of the author’s books and this one is definitely one I’d read again.

Both blessed and cursed with a highly-active imagination, Herbie is also on the verge of adolescenceand the story revolves around his continuing quest to win the heart of the fickle, red-haired Lucille Glass.

He falls in love with a girl he can’t have. They share a soul of bittersweet pain.

I read an excerpt of this book back in the s in a 7th grade English anthology; late last year I finally made the effort to hfrman out the title and author, so that early this year I could read the whole book.

He had been publicly pilloried on the train as General Garbage, and General Garbage he remained all summer. The use of alliteration in this book is a constant, as seen in one of my favorite sentences “Bulldog, Bulldog” was duly sung in draggy discords.

Getting out of trouble, staying ahead. I really loved City Boy.

First impressions are hard to change. There are lots of parts where I giggled or chuckled. Very Tom Sawyer-esque, straightforward, readable and entertaining.
