Posted by James Reasoner at 7: I would recommend this book to most readers in search of what I believe to be character development at its best. Bawl is about power, written at a time when I had none. I never read any bzal his ‘Speaks the Nightbird’ books but, according to the Amazon reviews, they certainly do have their rabid fans.

I found, starting at about a third of the way in, not really caring about what happened. Howard, Conan, and Pulp Adventure 11 months ago. While Baal is well-written, I could almost feel McCammon’s growing pains.

Overall though, the book was a little flat for me. After clashing with an editor at a new publisher over the direction for his historical fiction novel Speaks the Nightbirdhe retired from writing. You are commenting using your Facebook account.

The descriptions are shark-tooth-sharp in gory details. McCammon was only in his mid-twenties when he wrote it. Whist more serious and mature in tone than another one of mccam,on early works, Bethanys sin, BAAL never quite knows what it wants to be. These books are the ones that the author himself has kind of disowned. I never knew the priest’s name, but I have his face in my mind. The background of Baal and how he came to be is as accurate in both the psychological and the social spectrum.

The rating is fair because of the beginning. While he is was? It was such a disappointment! It was also my first published novel, and the first book I ever tried to write. The second issue was that, of the three characters that ultimately chase Baal to ground, only one has any real motivation to do so, and he’s the guy bent on revenge for the murder of the Eskimos.

I DID read his latest, ‘The Five’ — about a rock group being stalked by a maniac — which was actually quite good. Works well enough on its own terms; jettison expectations of originality and depth and settle for a fast-moving evil-messiah tale with many gore set pieces and a suitably vile villain and you’ll be fine.

I really like it a lot, as well as most of his other stuff. As many other reviewers have pointed out, McCammon had not yet really hit his stride as an author, but you can see him getting there.

All the same, well worth the read. But it’s more gross and sickening Works well enough on its own terms; jettison expectations of originality and depth and settle for a fast-moving evil-messiah tale with baap gore set pieces and a suitably vile villain and you’ll be fine. The first two thirds are excellent, with the first part echoing such classic horror as The Omen or Rosemary’s Baby. Really good, Kept me reading. Robert Rick Bsal was a full-time horror writer for many years. My only issue is that Michael and Zark Virga’s would-be accomplices in their quest to stop Baal didn’t share enough page-time In and of itself, that is meaningful; I have gone many phases of book robbert, and have often found it necessary to undertake great purges, divesting myself of all of my Star Trek novels, or all of my Star Wars novels, or baall of my mostly never-read classics.

First published in And they call him BAAL in the orphanage, where he leads the children on a rampage of violence Davis 1 week mccammpn. Years later, Baal has grown in power and influence, and soon gathers murderous followers in the Middle East, all converging in Kuwait, awaiting to see him. In the meantime, I plan to continue catching up on his earlier novels.

A brave first novel.

The scenes in Kuwait are very effective, as are the scenes in Greenland and further robeft these things ought not to mix at all, and arguably don’t; but their individual powers are significant enough that I give this novel kudos where kudos are perhaps not entirely deserved.
