They translate their crimes into gifts; Tomas replaces Ika’s plastic sink handles with stolen chrome fixtures. The book was exceptionally good because in the middle of the toley, i was a little bit lost of who was who and it got to the point where i didn’t really care anymore, but my attention came back at americsn end of the story when something intriguing occurred during the incident with Ben, Tomas, and Gabe where Ben, the little boy,was being threatened by Tomas and Gabe, knowing that Gabe isn’t really the type of person to become violent all of a sudden.

Even though this novel was relatable and a simple read, I had hoped for a more satisfying ending.

Two brothers are sons of a Filipino mother and a white American father. The novel follows the perspective of Gabe who is just a teenage boy.

While I’m not sure that I’d use the book in its entirety, amegican are some excerpts that would certainly be thought-provoking. The tragedy is not that Gabe’s downfall was inevitable, but that it was so avoidable.

Although the book doesn’t end all neatly tied up in a little bundle, I think it reflects more accurately real life and it’s vagaries. Hard-hitting and brash, this debut novel takes a cold, clear-eyed look at the American immigrant experience.

Although I am not Filipina, I felt that I was able to relate to a lot of what Tomas and Gabe were feeling, especially as it relates to feelings of shame, especially about their immigrant mother.

Tomas has adopted the Mexican gangster style of dress and breeds attack dogs that he sells to the Hollywood celebrities who inhabit the fringes of their lives.
