A very interesting read. One must think in Latin when reading Klossowski. When I finally found a copy of this, it caught my eye in passing tucked into the theory and philosophy shelves at my favorite used book store. In the definitive structuring of the trilogy, Klossowski left Le Souffleur at the end, but reversed the order of the two other volumes.
But not exactly recommended to general interest. Moreover, in Klossowski, the sustained quasi-theatrical poses making up the sexual scenes do not particularly create the illusion of continuous sexual movement. Not that my ability to understand anything is in any way a standard of quality, but I have to wonder how many readers are likely to put in the work on a text of abstract theology about debaucherous Templar souls awaiting Judgement. The spirit of the Grand Baphomeet uses the bellows to capture and interrogate other spirits. Curiously, Octave is said to be an autobiographical character. After the prologue, all of the characters in the novel so far bapuomet the disembodied spirits of the dead, seen as swirling breaths of air.
For him, writing was no rhetorical game, but rather the very act by which imaginative subject matter is dealt with, then exorcized. Thus the potential for sin after death is far greater and more sullying than in life, when simply klossoski acting upon impulses lessens their gravity. The setting, tone, and style are at first gothic, but with the appearance of the disembodied spirit of Saint Teresa klossowksi Avila baroque elements begin to dominate and to mix with evocations of Masonic and esoteric ritual, Gnostic heresy, and theological but also philosophical discussion.
I agree with the other reviewer who said that it helps to baaphomet an idea of Klossowski’s work coming in, but the introduction by Ponce and “the Prose of Actaeon” by Foucault help to give any reader a pathway into the ideas within this work.
