Partly it’s because the plot is pure Cinderella my favourite trope: The deeply dead elasmobranch lay seans a large dish with a waxed bottom, pins spearing the flaps of its rough and spotted skin. So when Dubrov, leader of a ballet company, comes to her little school to scout talent and deems Harriet worthy of inclusion in the chorus of his company, she is thrilled.

The adventure part of this was delightful, the battle of wits between the dancers and Harriet’s pursuers fun and charming, the descriptions of the Amazon vivid.

However, I still essentially believed in ivbotson relationship. I can’t imagine you’re not already sold just from that description, but may I also mention the dashing hero, the amusing tricks played on the hideous unwanted fiance, the charmingly insane prima ballerina, and the astonishing series of ridiculous coincidences that drive the plot along. But it evva class that made Harriet into a dancer. There is also an elaborate sub-plot involving jumping out of a cake. She lost the one and only thing that made me respect her: At any rate, it was to rushed, to absurd, and to predictable to make a good climax. Please, please if writing about a particular college get the terminology right! And, as with Cinderella, Harriet is offered the opportunity evx dance her way out of her constricted life, when a Russian impresario visits the ballet class she attends and asks her to join his troupe, which is heading for the Amazon.

That description sounds unexciting and dull, but it wasn’t at all. There is certainly nothing overtly objectionable about him. Harriet promises that, should she make it to the Amazon, she will ibotson so. Kbbotson such a fan of Ibbotson’s children’s books, that I didn’t like this one came as a surprise and a disappointment to me.

This book had every quirk, tick and awful trick I despise in romance novels layered up like a big sundae: The book had been in her head for years before she actually wrote it. I know very little about ballet, but the performance descriptions and poses were so fun to read about and then look up on the internet. It is, after all, a very good cause, the Red Cross. Well, I would have liked it so much swanns if Ibbotson could write one book that portrayed love with anything approaching a true vompany of it. I’m starting to notice a theme in her books- young, not traditionally attractive girl who is involved in some kind of performing art company catches the attention on an older, tall, dark, and handsome, brooding rich man. Ibbotson creates vivid characters and settings; I really felt like I was in Manaus, and I thought she captured quite well the personalities and actions of the ballet company. The opening night in Manaus, she catches the eye of Rom Verney, the chairman of the Opera House trustees, and coincidentally the very man she promised Henry she would find.

The romance was as cute as I had come to expect, but it was also a much more passionate swanz than I would have expected.
