I’m not a parent, but this book still hit me pretty hard at times; I honestly don’t know how someone who has actually lost a child could get through this thing. The result is a strange, harrowing, deeply soulful and, in moments, quite unexpectedly beautiful book. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

The literary genre of mourning lyric is a very delicate one, because it is so easy to fall into cheap self-pity, superficial lamentation or pathetic exaggeration, or at least, so it can seem to an outsider. Grossman has indeed concluded his book and has “found the words” to describe how ffuori parent might continue to live after watching their own child perish.

He emphasizes, guori, how these parents have fallen out of time since that moment their child went ‘there’. He tries to reconnect with life by recreating it the way it should be: What they had thought was their life has been taken away, and the only choice they have remaining is to walk into the unknown in an attempt to get that life back, not caring if they lose what little they have left.
