Apr 01, elbren rated it liked it. Katherine Kurtz does a great job of weaving a tale that is both entertaining and insightful. I had never heard of Katherine Kurtz, until about a month ago. Nonetheless, Camber continues to prepare Cinhil for the throne, attempting to teach him about the secular world that he abandoned.

Camber of Culdi was an excellent page-turner and the religious, historical element added a different dimension to the genre at the time it was published in The author’s world is as complex as ever and her prose still dry, detailed and somehow able to still keep my attention.
She juxtaposes the political intrigues and jealousies found in any seat of power against the responsibility of those who govern towards those they govern.
The Legends of Camber of Culdi Trilogy
I think the Camber books and the Heirs of Camber books are some of Katherine’s strongest work. Definitely a fantasy story that withstands the test of time.
I pulled over off, went inside, discovered the Shannara books there by Terry Brooks, and have been a fanatic fan of his ever since. On the other, it’s clear that Deryni are special. This book, the first in the series, sets the scene for rebellion and the transformation of the ruling class during the hunt for the last true Haldane king. Rhys and Joram continue their search for the Haldane prince, but it is Camber and Rhys who eventually discover Cinhil, who is living the peaceful religious life of a monk in a secluded abbey.
Before his death, the patient confides that he is really Prince Aidan Haldanethe sole survivor of the Deryni coup that overthrew the Haldane kings eight decades earlier. I suppose I’ll put a view spoiler [ here just in case And here readers come face-to-face with cambsr Deryni legend.
Having read this and the other Deryni novels as a teenager growing up in the s, picking up Camber ccamber Culdi again after all these years was both a welcome return to a childhood haunt and a trepidatious homecoming for an older, more cynical me.
I’d been looking forward to re-reading the first two Deryni trilogies. Since she had that kind of influence on the genre, I decided to try out Katherine Kurtz. Read the preview to see how culdl overall plot continues though!

Granted, the books are a bit dated, but they’re from the 70s, not the 30s.
